AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
ESA Lab is an interdisciplinary research laboratory of excellence, established at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" and supported by the European Space Agency (ESA). Its creation marks the consolidation of a long-standing strategic synergy: as early as 2012, ESA and the University of Tor Vergata signed a five-year agreement for cooperation in research and innovation. Building on this intense collaboration, a Memorandum of Collaboration was signed in 2021, officially sanctioning the birth of the third Italian lab, ESA Lab.
The laboratory serves as a dynamic hub for disruptive innovation and cross-fertilisation, connecting the brightest minds in research with industrial agility and the vision of policymakers. Its primary objective is to build a robust bridge between ESA and academia, promoting technological innovation and education in line with the Space 4.0 vision. The laboratory aims to integrate space into society and the European economy, strengthening ties with both new and long-standing partners to address global challenges. Since May 2020, the laboratory has been an integral part of the ESA_Lab@network. Launched by ESA in 2016 as part of its core activities, the ESA_Lab@network (or "ESA_Lab@ – Partnering to Innovate") is a cooperation scheme designed to foster institutional links between ESA and academia, supporting universities and research institutes across Member States in co-developing new ideas and talent within the space sector.
RESEARCH PROJECTS AND RESEARCH AREAS
The laboratory operates within a multidisciplinary ecosystem that integrates environmental, computer science, and managerial expertise. Leveraging satellite data and advanced methodologies, ESA Lab focuses on:
- Sustainable Supply Chain Management: Research aimed at making space sector supply chains more efficient and resilient.
- Space Economy & Innovation: Analysis of economic trends to support the development of high-value-added projects.
- Earth Observation and Telecommunications: Utilization of satellite data for climate change monitoring, natural disaster management, and communication security.
- Sustainability and Resilience: Application of sustainability principles to new space business models in alignment with the UN Agenda.
- Applied Research and Technological Development: Support for the design, testing, and preparation of mission launches, with a specific focus on small satellites (SmallSats) and advanced propulsion and diagnostic systems.
RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS
ESA Lab serves as a strategic platform for international networking, situated on a campus that hosts world-renowned institutions such as the CNR and the Italian Space Agency (ASI).
- ESA_Lab@network: Active participation in the "Partnering to Innovate" cooperation scheme of the European Space Agency.
- Interuniversity and International Synergies: Structured collaboration with centres promoting interdisciplinary exchange in robotics, AI, and environmental sciences.
- Industrial Partnerships: A direct link between science and industry to transform research into consultancy and applicable market solutions.
EDUCATION & ENGAGEMENT
The laboratory is actively committed to public outreach and training the next generation of experts:
- ESA Educational Programs: Privileged access to high-profile workshops, summer schools, and programs such as Fly Your Satellite!
- Field Training: Open lectures held by industry experts, research opportunities, and support for Master’s and PhD theses focused on space sustainability.
- Challenges and Competitions: Participation in international initiatives such as the ESA – Computer in a Room Challenge.
- Scientific Outreach: Organization of seminars and participation in major events like the "European Researchers' Night" (Lange Nacht der Forschung) to enhance the visibility of space research.
