The Theory of Incentives with Applications to Governmental Organizations and Environmental Issues

18th - 20th September, 2013

The Summer Program is open to PhD students and more experienced researchers with an interest in the fields of microeconomics, applied economic theory, contract theory, industrial organization, environmental economics, and institutional economics. However, the Program welcomes researchers from also other fields.
Lectures will be given in English and will be held in morning and afternoon sessions on a three-day basis.
This year's Summer Program invited guests are:

David Martimort (Paris School of Economics)

18th, 19th September 2013, (10.00-13.00; 14.00-18.00)
Starting from the basic approach presented in my book with Jean Jacques Laffont, “The Theory of Incentives”, I will present rigorous but intuitive tools to analyse incentive problems in organizations. Developing the basic approach in various directions, I will use these tools to discuss a number of applications to different organizations and institutions. Particular focus will be devoted to the recent developments on how incentives shape public decision making, and on the functioning of governments and governmental organizations. The choice of topics has a broad appeal to whoever is interested in incentives. (Go to David Martimort Website)

Wilfried Sand-Zantman (Toulouse School of Economics)

20th September 2013 (10.00-13.00; 14.00-18.00)
Building on the tools provided by David, I will analyse environmental problems, such as pollution externality and common-pool problems, and their policy remedies. I will highlight the importance of asymmetric information and show that mechanism design provides an interesting framework to study classical issues concerning the environment, such as free-riding in public good provision and incentives. Contract theory tools will also be applied to study the behaviour of pollution-generating firms and the formation of international agreements. (Go to Wilfried Sand-Zantman Website)
