organise an ERASMUS Intensive Programme on

Efficiency and Productivity Analysis Programme (EPASP)

Lifelong Learning Programme 2013-1-IT2-ERA10-52996

June 30th - July 11th 2014

The Summer Programme is of interest to those researchers in economics, social sciences and statistics that want to improve their expertise in efficiency and productivity analysis at both micro and macro levels. The objective is to provide a comprehensive and up–to–date survey of the existing models, together with a significant discussion on data and on the core methods of practically measuring efficiency and productivity.

The Course is open to students at Master and PhD level and more experienced researchers with an interest in the field of efficiency and productivity. However, it welcomes researchers from also other fields.

Renowned European academics from different universities and backgrounds will develop a comprehensive and innovative course with a particular focus on applied issues.

Lectures will be in English and will be held in morning and afternoon sessions on a two-week basis.

Good knowledge of STATA (data management, do file programming) is a prerequisite for the admission.

Registration is open !

IMPORTANT ! Students enrolled at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", University of York and University of Southern Denmark can apply for reserved seats, financially supported by EU.

Programme

This course will present the latest contributions and developments in the field of efficiency and productivity growth measurement in manufacturing and services. The objective is to provide a comprehensive and up–to–date survey of the existing models, together with a significant discussion on data and on the core methods of practically measuring efficiency and productivity. First, the students are introduced to the measurement of partial and total factor productivity growth. Different parametric and non–parametric approaches to the productivity measurement in the context of firm–specific modeling are discussed. Second, a detailed survey of the econometric approach to efficiency analysis will be discussed, focusing on modeling, distributional assumptions and estimation methods. The correspondence between a number of hypotheses and empirical findings are examined through a varieties of relevant empirical applications. Third, measurement of inputs and outputs in manufacturing and services are discussed, with a particular emphasis to the analysis of efficiency and productivity growth in the service sector.

At present no comprehensive programme exists in Europe where leading experts in the field cover both theoretical and empirical analyses at graduate and post-graduate level. Furthermore, the empirical techniques covered in the morning classes will be applied in afternoon’s computer sessions, in which participants will estimate the different models using datasets designed for the purpose.

Morning Lectures will be given by teaching staff from the three organising universities.

The Summer Programmes' afternoon computer classes will focus on applied issues that will be analysed, mainly, using the Stata commands sfcross and sfpanel, two new user written packages documented at Stata Journal .
For this reason a good knowledge of STATA (data management, do file programming) is a prerequisite for the admission.

Registration will take place on Monday, June 30th from 8.30 in classroom S12, 2nd floor, building A, School of Economics, University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, via Columbia 2, Rome.

Morning Lectures will be held in room S12, 2nd floor, building A, h. 9:15 - 12:45 am

Afternoon Computer sessions will be held in room S4, 2nd floor, building A, h. 2:00 - 5:30 pm
